The Zoe

The Zoe
Sold
I don't know about you, but when you have 2 sweet peeps, you will do just about anything to get them to sleep.  I was stuck a few Sunday's ago with a whiny 3 1/2 year old and a 7 month old, who I SWEAR has not slept in days and I just couldn't take it anymore.  I packed them in the truck and did what I usually do when I can't take it anymore - I drove.

And soon, I was driving in complete and beautiful silence.

It was nearing 4 pm - when, on a Sunday, the garage sales are packing up and quitting for another week, and I saw her - the sweetest little bookshelf.

I made sure my babies were asleep - one drooling, one snoring, and I slipped out of the car, locking it behind me.  I seriously skipped across the street and pounced on that little bookcase.

The owner told me it was once her Grandmother's - a lovely reminder of winter evenings by the fire, snug and cozy in an afghan, drinking hot chocolate and finally being able to slide a story out of the dusty shelves.  When her Grandma was moved to an old folks home, she made sure to save the bookshelf, and it had sat, ever since in her attic, collecting dust and taking up space.  Like I've heard so many times before, "It's time to move on" and here that bookcase was - filled with phantom stories and old memories, sitting alone on a driveway - dejected.

Pistachio stripes
The bookcase was in terrific shape - her color wasn't even that bad!  We gave her a good cleaning and a sanding before priming and painting her in all white.  Suddenly, she was fresh and new, but a little boring.  So we scoured our paint collection and stumbled upon a custom pistachio green - a reminder of the days of yore.  We free handed some stripes on her top to give her a little character, and then distressed her a little bit - giving a little bit of history and patina back to her.  Finally, she was waxed to make her durable under all those sliding pages.

The Zoe is a little thing - perfect for a little girl or boy to put their treasures upon, or even the college student to store their books!
