The Bonnie

The Bonnie
The Bonnie was a guilty pleasure for me.  I saw her in an ad and instantly fell in love with the blurry picture.  I paid way too much for her, especially when we went to pick her up in Edmonton, a full hour and a half drive away.  Was she beautiful?  Sure, in that, "this is my baby, of course she's beautiful!" sort of way.

When we picked her up, we were under the impression that she had a "lovely" patina.

Patina:  "the sheen on a surface that is caused by much handling."

I didn't realize that patina also meant, dog chewed, mottled, stained, painted and repainted badly, and carved with a knife. This was not patina.  This was a disaster.

We thought we could just clean her up and throw on a pretty crystal knob and sell her as is.

The Bonnie
We were wrong.

So she got the usual treatment - sanded her all the way down to the bare wood, 2 coats of primer, 3 coats of white paint and a single, dry brushed coat of aqua blue.  A little distressing and a crystal knob and voila - a romantic little telephone table, perfect nestled against a sturdy wing back chair or topped with a handful of your best reads!

She's one of the favourite's at Sweet Peep Design Company, and pretty sure she might be the one to stick around, but if she strikes your fancy, and her new patina looks just right for your sweet and romantic home, please email us at:

Just a side note: Do you know how epically huge Edmonton is?  I looked down at my navigation app on my phone and it said I had to drive 39 kilometers into the city. 39 kilometers.  And it's not like I wasn't already into the city.  I was WELL INTO THE CITY and  I had to drive 39 MORE kilometers into the city.  Seriously...Edmonton is bigger than my home state of Connecticut.  Yet another moment in my life when I catch a glimpse into the tiny little world I've let myself live.  Ask me about my Seattle Ikea expedition sometime...

The Betta

The Betta
When we went to pick up the Betta, my husband just  shook his head and said, "You know how everyone makes one huge mistake in business?  This one might be yours."  Ohhh...the support...

Some pieces are a restoration, some are a rehab and some are a reconstruct.  You can guess which one the Betta was!

Remember those old 80's dresser/entertainment stands that everyone had? Those ugly wood veneered, particleboard things with atrocious gold handles? Everyone had one - you might still have one in your basement!
This is one of those - but oh, so much better! Given the royal treatment, this piece went from an 80's monstrosity of veneer and particleboard and turned clean and countrified, with shaker panel doors, chicken wire cupboards, a new back and finally she got a coat of primer, 3 coats of paint and 3 coats of varnish to make sure her finish doesn't scuff when you put a TV or your favourite dishes out on Thanksgiving!
The Betta
The Betta is finished with a country green paint and distressed just enough to make it look like it's been in your home forever! She is finished with twisty black knobs and flowery black pulls to give her a sense of country and nostalgia.

Surely, the Betta will make a perfect addition to anyone's country home!

Delivery to Edmonton or Calgary and areas is available for a $50.00 surcharge.

The Margot

The Margo

Brought from Quebec many years ago and constructed in a traditional British Colonial style, the Margot is a sweet little dresser with 2 louvered top drawers and 4 roomy bottom drawers. All drawer fronts have dovetail joints and all drawers glide perfectly on wooden slides. This piece is perfect for a dresser, a large nightstand or even a buffet in a small dining room.

Gray striped top
She came to us from a tiny old house in the middle of Blackfalds, left for who knows how long by a previous owner and given to us by a young couple from Vancouver, ready to renovate and put their own spin on their forever home.

This sweet little dresser has been restored mostly with three layers of white paint, except for her top, where she is striped with white and pewter gray.  She has been finished with a layer of clear wax to keep her strong through heavy use. For a little surprise, open a drawer and find a repeat of the pewter paint found in the stripes! She is finished with chunky brushed silver handles to mimic her straight lines.  Finally, she has been mildly distressed, to let her true colours show - a medley of dark and light brown wood.

The Margot
Rustic and Chippy, the Margo will bring a uniqueness and personality to any home!

Delivery to Edmonton or Calgary and areas is available for a $50.00 surcharge.

Placed in four mismatched frames for either hanging or setting, this set brings the nostalgia of older days and the reminder that everything in our life is not only different and unique, but beautiful as well in both its perfections and imperfections.

This is a one of a kind set - unique to you and only you, created by local artist, Cherilyn Michaylow.

A Piece of Art: Fading

Straight from a fading time, this multimedia piece, aptly named "Fading" provides a glimpse into an older, simpler, forgotten time when work was done with our hands, dirt under our fingernails was a symbol of pride, when time was measured by the soft tick of a hand wound clock and dreams floated on the gossamer wings of a butterfly.
This is a one of a kind piece of art - unique to you and only you, created by local artist, Cherilyn Michaylow.
